Our outdoor climbing venues are located on beautiful natural rock formations within the White River National Forest system, approximately a 35 to 40-minute drive from Breckenridge. This short drive takes you away from the heavily crowded resort areas to secluded, scenic cliffs offering stunning panoramic mountain vistas.

Do you provide transportation from Breckenridge?

No. Apex Mountain School does not provide transportation under any circumstances. Guests are 100% responsible for their own vehicle transit to and from the designated meeting location or trailhead. Please plan for a scenic 35-40 minute drive from the Breckenridge area to meet your guide.

What skill levels can participate in this climbing course?

Our courses are completely adaptable. We welcome absolute beginners who have never touched a climbing harness, intermediate gym climbers looking to transition to real outdoor rock, and advanced climbers tracking specific movement goals. Because your outing is completely private, the route selection is customized entirely to your comfort level.

What if someone in our group is afraid of heights?

This is incredibly common! Because our trips are strictly private, there is absolutely no pressure. Our professional guides are experts at managing comfort zones. We can start on shorter, low-angle slabs just a few feet off the ground, allowing every participant to progress at a pace that feels productive and rewarding to them.

  • Phase 1: Arrival & Gear Fundamentals Meet your private guide directly at our designated trailhead or staging location. We begin with a professional gear fitting for your technical climbing shoes, harness, and helmet, alongside an introduction to hardware care and knot-tying fundamentals.

  • Phase 2: The Approach Hike Enjoy a brief, active warm-up hike through scenic deciduous forests and mountain landscapes to reach the base of the day’s climbing cliff.

  • Phase 3: Private Coaching & Vertical Movement Hit the rock! Your guide will manage all rope setups on walls ranging from 40 to 100 feet. Instruction covers body positioning, footwork efficiency, proper belay mechanics, and standardized communication protocols. Depending on site conditions and interest, you may also explore rappelling techniques.

  • Phase 4: Personal Debrief & Wrap-Up Conclude your session with a personalized recap from your instructor, highlighting technique breakthroughs and key movement notes to take with you on your next vertical adventure.

Essential Items:

  • Sturdy tennis shoes or trail shoes for the approach hike (strictly required—no sandals or open-toed footwear).

  • At least 32 oz. of water per person.

  • High-energy trail snacks.

  • A lightweight waterproof or windproof outer shell jacket (alpine weather shifts quickly).

  • High-SPF sunscreen and polarized sunglasses.

Recommended Items:

  • Longer athletic shorts or lightweight pants (highly recommended for comfort under a tightened climbing harness).

  • Moisture-wicking, synthetic clothing layers (avoid heavy cotton).

  • Lip balm with SPF protection.

  • A camera or smartphone to capture your high-altitude climbs.

  • Secure Proper Approach Footwear: You must wear sturdy, closed-toe athletic shoes or trail runners for the dirt approach paths to the cliffs. Sandals, flip-flops, or slip-on shoes are not permitted for movement around the crag.

  • Dress in Flexible Layers: High-altitude mountain weather changes rapidly. Dress in breathable, flexible athletic layers so you can easily adapt to changing sun, wind, or shade temperatures while standing at the cliffs.

  • Pack Personal Fuel: Climbing uses significant energy! Ensure every member of your party packs enough water (32 oz. minimum) and high-density snacks to stay hydrated and energized for a 4-hour active session.

  • Define Your Objectives: Think about what you or your family want to get out of the day. Whether it’s overcoming a fear of heights, learning how to belay on real rock, or mastering steep cracks, sharing your goals helps your guide build the perfect day.

  • Proactive Health Communication: Please inform your guide of any past injuries, physical limitations, high-altitude adjustments, or medical conditions prior to starting the approach hike so they can adjust the day’s parameters smoothly.
