From first-time campers to seasoned ultralight backpackers, the White River National Forest that surrounds the Vail Valley attracts outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen of all kinds. The Rocky Mountain region offers everything from world-class rock climbing to flyfishing from high mountain streams and lakes, hammock-ready trees beside babbling brooks and meadows, and ample space to play. Waterfalls, hot springs, overlooks, sunny clearings, cool pine stands, and more can be found when exploring the trails of the area while backpacking.

Consider reaching out to Apex Mountain School regarding the planning and logistical aspects of your next venture. Our backpacking prep packages incorporate route planning, time management plans, meal ideas, jumpstart packing lists, regional wildlife information, basic navigation skills training, and optional equipment rentals (everything from stoves to sleeping bags to cookware). Whether you’re heading out on a day hike, an out-and-back, a loop, a 14’er, or a multi-day venture, we can help you get yourself feeling prepared and ready.

A great product for visitors to the area who can’t feasibly travel with their own equipment, may be unfamiliar with the local landscape, destinations, or landmarks, our backpacking prep packages are also helpful for the logistical side of group trips (boy scout or girl scout outings, wedding parties, or family vacations), or for seasoned backpackers who don’t have time to do research on their next outing to the area and would like the prep work completed and presented to them as a nearly complete product, ready for their adventure.

Standard backpacking prep packages begin with communication between the clients and the office staff, so we can get a good feel for your group, your goals, your objectives, and any special concerns or needs you may have. Next, we will offer our recommendations for the outing, and set a meeting time for you to come to our office, go over and rent gear, learn basic wilderness navigation skills, go over route planning and maps, and any additional questions or concerns. Our experienced guides are local to this area and will do everything they can to prepare you for your adventure.
