This expanded Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training is a great start towards preparing yourself for traveling in the Colorado backcountry. Many backcountry emergencies can be easily managed, and often prevented, with knowledge and basic backcountry medicine skills.

For a more comprehensive Wilderness Medicine offering, see our Wilderness First Responder and WFR Recertification pages for more wilderness medicine courses.

Seasoned backcountry enthusiasts, land managers, guides, and athletes agree – wilderness medicine is a key ingredient in increasing preparedness and self-sufficiency in the wilderness. This WFA training takes place over 2 eight hour days, and focuses on:

  • Response and Assessment
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries
  • Environmental Emergencies
  • Survival Skills
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Medical Emergencies
  • CPR training and certification (available at your request)

Course days are split between classroom lectures, presentations and mock scenarios.

This extended Wilderness First Aid course provides an overview of the concepts addressed in the industry-standard Wilderness First Responder course (we encourage you to also consider our Wilderness First Responder course, which is a more comprehensive wilderness medicine offering). We believe that an additional day of training in this extended 3-day WFA course provides the opportunity for reinforcing fundamental skills beyond those covered in a two-day course.

Students who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of completion card and an American Heart Association Adult Heart saver CPR card (or equivalent). Certification is based on successful completion of the course, which includes 100% attendance of course. Instructors provide ongoing feedback and many opportunities for questions. Final assessment of each student’s skills includes written and practical exams.

This course has a minimum of 8 participants.

We welcome all ability and fitness levels. Some personal gear provided by participant, see the gear list tab above.
